Chapter 20

Gethsday Morning, 10th of Seeyrn, Year 678, 4th Age

The next day, I gave my report to the captain with the girls present. She wasn’t keen on having them in the room, but I insisted they hear everything. When I explained what happened, I made sure to leave out the part where Kiersa helped defeat the rodent. Instead, I told her that I blasted it with the moonstone until nothing was left.

The captain didn’t look at me the entire time. Instead, she stared pensively at the painting of the original Red Breakers. After I finished the story, she turned back to us.

The others weren’t happy with finding this stuff out at the same time as her, but when I’d gotten back the previous night, I’d collapsed at the front door. Sal had to drag me up to the bed and laid a vial of Daurag’s Kip-Up Tonic by my bedside. Even with the tonic, my legs felt like lead weights.

I took a moment to sit down as Captain Dawnthorn gave out her orders. Dawnthorn walked by each of us, her hands behind her back and looking out to the window. The first person she spoke to was Uli, who kept her eyes straight and posture rigid.

“Siannodel,” Dawnthorn said in a dangerously casual voice. “Mind telling me where the rest of the team was during Merrick’s excursion?”

I was about to speak, but the captain put a finger in the air as I opened my mouth, silencing me. Uli never once broke her line of vision and stared directly forward.

“I and guild members, Brightwood and Nightstrike, were indisposed.”

Mara cringed while Giezha looked at me, her eyes narrowed to slits.

“Personal decisions, Captain.”

Dawnthorn stopped in front of Uli but refused to make eye contact. She just stared perpendicular to Uli and smiled.

“Because?”

Uli blinked once, and her jawline tightened.

“Because we were irresponsible and drank too much.”

The four of us sat there waiting for the captain to explode. For her to rip into every single one of us about being idiots. To start smacking us in the face and asking if we really wanted to be here. If we were worth bringing into the guild and worth pinning this mission on.

But it didn’t happen.

She just stood there, silently. As she stood there, the temperature in the room rose by a hundred degrees. I wanted to stand up and pace back and forth. But the sheer weight in the room left me unable to stand. The captain laughed to herself for a minute or two. Then she turned to Giezha.

“Didn’t take you for a drinker,” Dawnthorn said, patting Giezha on the back.

Stiffening up, she responded. “I’m not, Captain.”

“But the other day?”

“Was the exception.”

“Was the exception, yes.” Tapping her lip, she then walked over to Mara.

“Anything to add, Brightwood?”

Mara was having trouble keeping a still face. Her bottom lip trembled, and she had to physically bite it to stop it from moving. Digging her fingernails into her palms, Mara took a deep breath.

“Only that Asher... should have had backup.
